Wassily Kandinsky, Oriental, 1909

About the artwork

Oriental - 1909

An early masterpiece of Russian avant-garde

Oriental is a 1909 painting by Wassily Kandinsky, painted during his early Munich period when he was developing what would become his revolutionary abstract visual language.

The work is part of Kandinsky's breakthrough transitional period between representational and fully abstract art, painting exotic imagery that suggested spiritual and cultural otherness.

Painted while Kandinsky was in his late 30s, before the founding of Der Blaue Reiter in 1911 and well before his breakthrough abstract works of 1913 onward.

The painting belongs to a private collection and exemplifies the artist's lifelong interest in cross-cultural spirituality and synesthesia between visual art and music.
