About the artwork

Boats in a Port - 1926

A bold late-career celebration of port life

Boats in a Port is a 1926 painting by Henri Matisse, painted during his Nice period when the artist was working in the south of France.

The work belongs to the Bemberg Foundation in Toulouse, France, and was painted when Matisse was 56 years old, well into his mature style of bold flat color and dynamic composition.

Painted in the same year as his famous Le Grand Nu and his representation of the USSR at the 1926 Venice Biennale, the work exemplifies Matisse's late-career focus on Mediterranean light and form.

The painting rewards extended viewing and is ideal for display on Samsung Frame TV and other 4K displays.
