The meadow that became a movement
Weidende Pferde I is a 1910 Franz Marc painting in which four grazing horses stand beneath a vermilion, blue, and yellow landscape. The work marks a transition from post-impressionist observation toward Marc's spiritual language of color.
The painting belongs to Marc's four-canvas Grazing Horses series made across 1910 and 1911. It sits one year before Marc and Wassily Kandinsky launched Der Blaue Reiter.
The Lenbachhaus records the work under inventory G 12576 as oil on canvas, 64 by 94 centimeters. It was confiscated in 1937 as degenerate art and later returned to the collection.
